ANNOUNCEMENTS:
President announced District 5280 now has a Scholarship program.  District 5280 scholarship program has more restrictive criteria to its grants. its grants are limited to high school graduates rather than for college students.  GVN Rotary has been involved with the Valley College Foundation, which gives grants to Valley College students and for those planning to continue at a 4 year College/University. GVNR also partners with the Local Labor Union 300 Foundation, to give scholarships to children of union members who plans to attend university/college.
             
Marie Valencia:
Announced that the entry for The Pageant of the Arts has been extended to March 30, 2021. According to her, there are not enough entrants/participants to cover the prizes in each category.
 
Bret Ferrente:
Announced that he attended the PETS conference for President-elects for the Western United States.
 
A major topic in the conference was that Rotary needs to do a better job of promoting ourselves.  Going back to Lulu's is a major goal for our club.  He also said that the Environmental Footprints project has not yet had a successful take-off at Grant Middle School.
 
Barbara Pampelone
Kris Fuess lost her battle with cancer.  Contact information for her husband Steven will be forwarded.
 
First Guest Speaker- Jillian Mckie
Jillian Mckie had contacted Catherine Ibrahim(Past President) about  a scholarship grant from GVN Rotary.  She was extended an invitation to attend our meeting to formally introduce herself to the club.
 
According to Jillian, she attends Cleveland High School and lives in Northridge. She has been a board member of an arts foundation for several years.  Jillian has a 4.2 GPA, has played volleyball for 8 years, works in a part-time job and is involved in a lot of extracurricular activities with non-profits.  She has researched Rotary and admires its goals of its members giving back to the community.
 
Second Speaker - Carolyn Urquidez
She spoke on the recently concluded Kidney Quest Foundation held on March 9, 2021, which featured simultaneous translation in English and Spanish. 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
According to Carolyn(President of the Kidney Quest Foundation), what started as a local outreach organization to renal community, Kidney Quest Foundation offers dialysis support and its biggest client is Cedars-Sinai.  The foundation distributed 3000 "Stay Safe Kits" to kidney patients just prior to the Covid-19 shutdown on March 8, 2021.
 
Some of the many topics covered at the conference included kidney failure, kidney transplantation, organ donations and recovery, skin conditions, dialysis support, life care planning, healthy eating for seniors on dialysis and other interesting topics.  Speakers at the conference included Dr. Hickson (Henry Mayo) Dr. Trujillo (John Hopkins), Dr. Schapiro (New York Presbyterian Hospitals). Others included Dr. Jamal, Cardiologist, (West Hills Hospital) Dr Zahi Nassoura, a vascular surgeon.  Thomas Mone spoke about organ recovery. Dr. Billys spoke on transplants, post-transplants and skin conditions.
 
Carolyn also mentioned the American Association of Kidney Patients as support group for those with kidney disease.
